Our Perfect Priest
By Dr. Roger Vogel
I want you to consider with me today one phrase from Hebrews 7:26. “For such a High Priest was fitting for us.” In this phrase God tells us that Jesus Christ was and is our perfect High Priest. Perfectly “fitted,” perfectly suited to meet every need we have. In the context surrounding this phrase we find out just what God means when He says Jesus is our perfectly suited priest.
1. He is holy (verse 26)—in His relationship to the Father, He is perfectly holy.
2. He is harmless (verse 26)—in His relationship to man He is perfectly merciful and compassionate.
3. He is undefiled (verse 26)—in His relationship to the world He never, one time, committed even one sin in action, attitude, or thought.
4. He is able to save (verse 25)—because He lives forever (verse 24) He is able to save us. Indicates we need saving. Saving from what? Our own sinful nature.
5. He is able to save completely (verse 25)—we are hopelessly and helplessly lost in our sin, but Jesus is able to completely save us.
6. He always lives (verse 25)—we need never fear calling on Him and not finding help.
7. He intercedes for us (verse 25)—His presence at the right hand of the Father as “the Lamb that was slain” is His intercession.
It is clear. God says we need a priest. But not just any priest. Not a priest who is just as sinful as we are. No, we need such a High Priest “fitting” for us. That is Jesus Christ. He is the only one. “For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.” I Timothy 2:5
And God tells us very clearly, “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12
If you have never cried out to God for the gift of salvation in Jesus Christ, you may do so today. “Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.” Hebrews 7:25
