A Troubled Heart

John 14 is a passage of great comfort to many people.  Sometimes we tend to think of this chapter by itself.  We may overlook the fact that there is a context to these comforting statements of Jesus.  In fact, the context is filled with all kinds of reasons why the disciples’ hearts could have been troubled.

In order to increase our appreciation of this comfort Jesus gives His people in John 14, let’s look briefly at that context.

1.) John 13: 8-9 – They feared not having a part with Jesus.

2.) John 13: 21-22 – They feared not knowing their own hearts.  When Jesus announced His betrayal, they each wondered if it was he.

3.) John 13:33 – They feared being left alone.  Jesus told them He was going away and they could not come with Him.  They had spent the last 2 ½ to 3 years with Him.  They did not want to be alone.

4.) John 13: 36 – They feared separation.  Separation from one they loved and depended upon.  Many folks face this fear in this life.

5.) John 13:38 – They feared being unworthy of the Lord.  Jesus told Peter he would deny Him three times before the cock crowed.

6.) Matthew 26:31 – (This is also in the same context).  They feared being a disappointment to the Lord.  Jesus tells them they will all be offended because of Him this night.

7.) Luke 22: 36-37 – They feared an uncertain future.  Jesus tells them their future is going to be uncertain and dangerous because I, as your leader, am “reckoned among the transgressors.”

In spite of all those possible sources of agitation, Jesus says to them, “Stop letting your heart be troubled.”  He proceeds to give them at last twelve reasons why they can have assurance and comfort.  Why not read this chapter today and make your own list of reasons for assurance and comfort from the Lord Jesus.
