Jesus' Ministry Today - Hebrews 12:2
Dr. Roger Vogel
It is true that Jesus finished the work the Father sent Him to do here on earth – John 17:4 - I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. That work of redemption was finished on the cross – John 19:30 - So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. We should rejoice in and trust in that finished work for us.
It is also true that Jesus continues to ministry in heaven for His people on earth. And sometimes I think we emphasize His finished work so much that we do not fully appreciate His ongoing ministry today for us.
That present ministry for us is the great theme of the Book of Hebrews – Hebrews 8:1 - Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens. If we obey the admonition to “keep looking unto Jesus” in Hebrews 12:2, we will see Jesus in His present ministry in heaven for us today. Let’s summarize that ministry as Hebrews presents it. Keep in mind this is only a summary. I trust it will encourage your further study of this all important ministry of our Lord.
- Hebrews 1:3 – His Position – sitting at the right hand of the majestic throne of God the Father.
- Hebrews 2:18 – His Power – He is currently able to help all who are tempted.
- Hebrews 4:14-16 – His Personal Understanding – You will never come to God with a temptation, a struggle, a heartache, etc., but what Jesus understands and sympathizes with you because He lived where you do. He was tempted in every point as we are.
- Hebrews 7:25 – His Praying – He prays for us as I John 2:1 tells us - My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
- Hebrews 9:14 – His Purging – He purges our conscience from the guilt of the broken law and sin so we can serve effectively.
- Hebrews 9:24-26 – His Presence – He is always present with the Father for us, having put away our sin.
- Hebrews 10:19-25 – His Preparing The Way – He opened the way to God for us by His blood, so let us draw near to God with assurance that He has justified us and is sanctifying us.
Let’s make His present ministry a renewed study so that we can “run with patient endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus….” (Hebrews 12:1-2)
